Diethylene glycol dimethyl ether, or bis(2-methoxyethyl) ether, is a high boiling point, nonprotonic polar solvent. It is a colorless transparent liquid with a faint ether odor and is miscible with water, alcohols, dimethyl ether, and hydrocarbon solvents.
It can be produced by reacting diethylene glycol monomethyl ether with dimethyl sulfate or chloromethane in the presence of sodium hydroxide; it can also be produced by reacting monoethylene glycol with methanol. Diethylene glycol dimethyl ether is mainly used as a solvent in organic chemical reactions. It can chelate small cationic groups and make the anion easier to react. Therefore, the use of this compound in reactions using metal organic reagents, such as Grignard reactions or reduction reactions using metal hydrides (e.g. borohydride reactions) may significantly increase the reaction rate. Its stability at high pH and high boiling point make it well suited as a solvent for reactions involving strong bases or for reactions requiring higher temperatures.
